Iridium will begin shipping the Iridium GO with the Iridium GO hardware revision 5A this week. This product will be pre-loaded with Firmware Version 2.1.24 This firmware update will take into consideration the internal hardware switch from the old GPS module—which is nearing the end of its useful life—to the new GPS module. The upgrade has no impact on how the gadget works or operates.
Important Notes:
The new GPS module is taller than its its predecessor; therefore, a small cutout was made in the battery compartment to accommodate the replacement. The cutout is covered with a black sticker to maintain existing battery compartment aesthetics. See the below images illustrating the described change. All devices with Iridium GO Hardware Revision 5A will have this cutout, and Firmware Version 2.1.24. Devices with Hardware Revision 5A should NEVER be downgraded. If a device with Hardware Revision 5A is downgraded in error, it will need to be upgraded using the manufacturing firmware upgrade tool. All older hardware units may be upgraded to Firmware Version 2.1.24; however, since there are no enhancements or improvements from an end user perspective, we will not be making this publicly available.
