There is an issue with high data usage of Iridium’s email which can rack up data via the Iridium Satellite Network. Don’t worry, we have a solution for you, the Email Money Saver!
What’s the Problem?
The issue at hand that clients have been having with their Iridium email account is that whenever that email is used, even on terrestrial networks, it uses up their satellite data. Admittedly, this can be a costly issue since satellite data is not exactly on the cheap side and clients feel that they should not have to pay that price while connected to a terrestrial network. We completely agree, and also have an easy solution for you!
The Iridium GO! has a “fetch” feature built into it which allows you to utilize your own third-party personal email address to get your emails that are sent to your “myiridium.net” email address. Essentially, what you are doing is setting up a HotMail or Yahoo account (or whatever third-party email you choose) and using that to get your “myiridium.net” emails instead of using Iridium’s email.
This effectively circumvents Iridium’s email and gets you your messages so you do not have to worry about those added charges; just simply hand out your third-party email address instead of Iridium’s. But beware, this is a terrestrial network issue. If you are outside the bounds of terrestrial networks you will be charged for data no matter what.
Here’s Your Solution
Open your Iridium Mail & Web App – go to “Settings” – “Your Account” – “Remote Services Configuration” and then follow the steps below for configuration:
- Account Type – As far as ease of use there are five pre-configured settings for certain types of email like HotMail for instance. Although, you can manually your POP3 and IMAP information and use almost any email with the fetch feature that you want.
- Username – The username of the account to be fetched needs to be entered here. Do not get your accounts confused, this happens to a lot of people, this is the login credentials for your personal third-party email like HotMail for example.
- Account Password – This is where you enter the password for your email account. Again, we advise to to try not to get your email account confused. This is your own personal third-party email; HotMail for instance.
- Server Address – This field may be automatically populated, if it is not then you need to enter the remote server name from the ISP managing the remote server.
- Port Number – This field may also be automatically populated, if it is not enter the port number as provided by the ISP managing the remote server.
- Use SSL – This may be required if your ISP requires it, if so, go ahead and enable it. If it is not required you may leave this disabled.
- Enabled – Please select “On” to enable your device to fetch your emails from your third-party email then hit “Save” to save your settings.
Now we need to check your Remote Fetch Settings:
- Navigate to your Remote Fetch Settings
- Set “Remote Fetch” to on
- “Fetch Asynchronously” should be set to “On” as well
- Display extended debugging information should be set to off for normal operation but you can enable it if you are having issues with your third-party email to see what is causing issues, though.
- Fetch number per cycle should always be set to ten. This sets the number of emails to go to your remote account during a single session. We recommend keeping this number set to a small one considering the limitations of the data throughput. We would even recommend lowering it to five if you are experiencing it bogging down at all.
