Germany, Hamburg, September 5, 2022 The Jan De Nul Group, a well-known maritime construction and civil engineering firm, has chosen Iridium’s Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) solution, the satellite company announced today. By implementing Iridium GMDSS, Jan De Nul is upholding its promise to give its employees the safest working conditions conceivable. Iridium GMDSS is the only totally worldwide and modern GMDSS solution available today, allowing for quick safety-of-life responses. It is also the only GMDSS service to offer integrated voice services at this time.
A sizable, adaptable, and contemporary fleet of dredging and offshore installation vessels is owned and operated by Jan De Nul. The Jan De Nul Group’s operations make it feasible for shipping traffic by maintaining the depth of rivers and canals, enlarging current ports, and constructing new ones.
“Jan De Nul plans to roll out GMDSS in all retrofits and newly built vessels,” said Nils Crabeel, Communication & Network Officer, Jan De Nul Group. “Having LRIT and SSAS alongside GMDSS in one terminal is an important advantage – as is both safety and non-safety voice capabilities.”
The first Iridium GMDSS terminal is the LT-3100S, created by Iridium partner Lars Thrane. The LT-3100S is a compact and lightweight system that can be used as a GMDSS system or as the primary onboard communications solution for any vessel in need of satellite communications.
“Jan De Nul is a powerhouse in this industry, and we are honored that they are equipping their fleet with Iridium GMDSS,” said Wouter Deknopper, vice president of maritime at Iridium. “Iridium GMDSS has seen great success in the market due to its integrated, truly global capability, providing all three services – distress alert, safety voice and maritime safety information, in one terminal. Along with our Iridium Certus® service, it has played a major role in our continued growth and leadership position for reliable maritime satcom.”
GMDSS is a service that offers seafarers in need life-saving assistance and is governed by international regulations. All Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) class ships must provide this service, and many of them have had to carry numerous terminals to accommodate various communications requirements. Even in Arctic and Antarctic waters, Iridium GMDSS is still the only option that provides fully worldwide coverage and offers all three essential GMDSS services: distress alert, distress voice, and maritime safety information (MSI). One terminal is used to supply all services, which makes use of Iridium’s fully worldwide, weather-resistant L-band satellite communication. These capabilities make the Iridium GMDSS service unrivaled in the sector when combined.
